The Wedding Receiving Line: Should We or Shouldn’t We?

in Weddings

Should we or shouldn’t we? That is the question. Do we have a receiving line after our wedding or not? Most couples these days choose not to. They will sometimes do what is called a faux send-off.

That is, after the wedding ceremony, all of the wedding guests go to the front of the wedding chapel and line the sidewalk. The wedding couple having exited the church and gone back around to re-enter the chapel, now come out the front door and walk down the sidewalk between their guests as they receive a wedding confetti shower.

They then will get into their wedding car and drive off to the reception. Or they may simply drive around the block as the guests head on to the wedding reception location and the couple will come back to the church for a few wedding photos.

Getting the guests on out of the way is also a good wedding idea since it allows workers to start the clean-up process including the confetti, unless it was biodegradable confetti.

Later, the bride and groom will come to the reception site and be introduced again to the guests as they enter the reception room. They then typically will go to their seat and began to enjoy the reception meal. After a while, the couple will get up and go from table to table to greet and thank their guests for coming.

This seems to be the best choice for most couples since doing a receiving line can take so much time. Just do a little math. If you have 100 guests at your wedding and it takes only about 25 seconds to speak to each guest, how long will that take?

The only reason you might want to have a receiving line right after the wedding ceremony is if some of the guests are not coming to the reception and you are afraid you would not get the chance to see or speak to them. Or, if some of the guests might leave the reception before you had a chance to speak to them, you could consider the receiving line.

If you do decide to have a receiving line not everyone who is in the wedding party has to be in the line. Many of the guests don’t know them anyway and do not know what to say to them. Plus, it just slows things down.

Also, if the receiving line is expected to take some time, you might want to have some attendants serve them light refreshments.
