Home plumbing can often be cared for and remedied easily without hiring an outside contractor. After working for many years as an Atlanta plumber, I can tell you that if the average home-owner took the time to learn some basics , they would save significant money in the long run. Modern plumbing fixtures are designed to be easy to install and remove, so many times it is possible for someone to repair or replace plumbing using nothing more than a few wrenches and an instruction manual. It is also possible, indeed necessary, for home owners to conduct simple repairs in order to keep their plumbing in full functioning order. This will not only save money in the long run, it keeps the pipes running fresh and fast for years to come.
The most basic thing any home user can do with their plumbing is to use chemicals to regularly remove deposits inside the pipe. This can range from liquid plumbing solutions to in-pipe chemicals intended to remove dissolved minerals which have begun to cling to the pipes. These minerals will, over time, fill the pipe and decrease the diameter through which water can flow, thus reducing the water pressure. They may also lead to deformations of the pipe, which leads to leaks. Care must be taken with these chemicals as most of them are powerful corrosives which can seriously injure a user if abused or not properly cared for. Most of these chemicals have instructions on the bottle, and all that is necessary for cleanup is to rinse the pipes thoroughly after the chemical is applied.
Leaks can usually be solved by tightening or replacing sections of pipe, or by coating them with a waterproof coating. If a pipe needs to be replaced, there is almost always a kit for that specific sort of pipe. Some even include the necessary tools. It is best to replace a section of pipe with another one that is as alike the original as possible, although upgrading to a better metal or plastic may be a good idea. It is important not to connect metal pipes to plastic ones without certain adapters. Metal pipes will expand and contract with changes in temperature, while plastic ones do not, and a plastic pipe connected to a metal pipe may fracture and leak.
