Around this time of year, many local and national motor cycle clubs get involved in charity or toy runs for children or in fact a whole range of interest groups. There are a couple of basic variations on this theme – sometimes the bikers arrange sponsorships and raise money for charities in this manner, as well as doing other fundraising activities – selling Harley decals (as well as other brands) is a popular choice.
Other local groups of bikers deliver bags of toys, collected through donations throughout the year, and deliver them to sick kids in hospitals or other care. One example is the toy run organized by the Motorcycle Riders Association in Melbourne, Victoria. This has been held for many years and is very successful. Riders decorate their bikes with Christmas gear and don Santa Costumes (many of them already have the beards to match). Vehicles taking part can vary wildly too, with one notable sight in recent years being a 2 wheel ‘sleigh’ complete with reindeer.
Toy runs are held by all kinds of different riding clubs and often the toy run is just the start of a longer single or multiple day outing – it’s a good time of year to get away, and starting a holiday on such a positive note is a nice feeling at any time of year. Some riders like to take part in the toy donations without joining in the main procession, and there is no reason that those who want to take part but stay out of the limelight can’t do so in this way.
These types of event are a great way for bikers to boost their image, which in some places can be tarnished by media coverage of incidents throughout the year. However it is also a great way for communities to come together and have fun with each other while also contributing something worthwhile to those who need it most.
