For true coffee lovers out there that enjoy making their espressos as much as drinking them, an espresso machine accessory would make the perfect gift. So what can you buy?
Tampers
Tampers are often included with machines, such as the Gaggia coffee machines range, but they are usually plastic ones that just about do the job. For a coffee artist, a tamper should add to the experience of making the coffee. There are so many to choose from but there are only two points to consider when buying one. Make sure you get one that fits the filter basket used in your machine and make sure that you like the look of it.
Coffee Cups
Quality espresso coffee should be drunk from a great coffee up and you should not be stuck for choice. The range is so huge you can find those that cost about a buck and other more collectible versions that cost hundreds.
You may think that the only importance of the coffee cup is in relation to how it looks when you drink from it, but you would be wrong. The quality of the cup which we will talk about below determines how stable the quality of the espresso is while you drink.
Quality cups are thought to be bowl shaped and made of thick, high fired porcelain. High fired cups are stronger and so less likely to break. You will feel that they are heavy and dense feeling when you pick them up. All cups should be pre heated though so they do not steal the heat from the coffee.
Knock Boxes
Knock boxes are small pans that collect the spent coffee grounds. They get their name as you need to knock the portafilter against and into the box to remove the grounds. Without one, you will have a really messy job on your hands of cleaning the portafilter. When you buy one make sure it will be big enough to handle the portafilter on your machine. Most cafes have large built in ones but for home use this is not required. Instead you are looking for something small but big enough that is good value for money.
