The name of the scam is taken from Section 4-1-9 of the Nigerian penal code which defines and prohibits advance-fee forms of scamming. Although the specific Nigerian 419 scam has been around since the 1980s—contacting victims first by letter, then fax and now email—advance-fee scams have been in existence for several hundred years.
