Cap and Trade Programs

in Politics

There has got to be a way for people to do their part in reducing global warming emissions besides relying on cap and trade programs to reduce carbon emissions. Collectively, if everybody were to make an effort, we could make a considerable difference.

There is a lot of talk about reducing your carbon footprint, but it requires conscientious effort on all sides of your lifestyle to make a difference. People who recycle or do composting may also consider finding an alternative form of transportation besides driving a car. Even carpooling, using public transportation or biking can greatly reduce your carbon footprint.

Other ways to conserve energy involves using compact fluorescent lightbulbs, low flow shower heads, and using new technologies in the home such as solar panels. We’ve seen a growing trend in businesses and in new homes the use of greener technologies. I’ve seen it in my daily errands as I go grocery shopping.

There are many organic food stores that use wind energy and have moved onto using reusable grocery bags. It’s these small changes that influence our view of the environment and affect our daily choices. If it weren’t for the introduction of reusable bags, I bet people wouldn’t care less about it. I have seen in Toronto, Canada how almost all the grocery stores charge extra for plastic bags to penalize the wasteful. I think this enforcement of change can be very beneficial and I’d like to see it in the United States as well. It’s not a huge change and yet as more and more people are getting accustomed to the idea of recycling on a regular basis now, it can make a huge impact.

It was also only a few years back in Toronto when they developed the ‘Green Bin program’, a compost program which collects organic waste. It has grown to become one of the most successful waste diversion programs in North America. This program reduces landfill-produced methane which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions nationwide. If some cities in the United States were to adopt this system and have every citizen do their part, what a shift in thinking it would be and how great it would be to see future generations actively take care of their environment.
